Benzodiazepines: Benefits, Risks, and Why Short-Term Use Matters
Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive drugs primarily used to treat anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and seizures. Renowned for their rapid onset of action, they provide quick relief from acute symptoms by calming the central nervous system.
However, clinical guidelines emphasise that while highly effective initially, benzodiazepines perform best when used for short durations to minimise tolerance and dependence.

The Benefits: Rapid Symptom Relief
Unlike SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), which can take four to six weeks to become fully effective, benzodiazepines like diazepam begin working within 30 to 60 minutes .
This makes them invaluable for:
- Breaking acute anxiety cycles
- Managing severe muscle spasms or tremors
- Providing pre-operative sedation
- Controlling alcohol withdrawal symptoms
The Risks: Tolerance and Dependence
The primary limitation of benzodiazepines is the development of tolerance.
With continuous daily use, the brain adapts to the drug’s presence by downregulating GABA receptors, meaning higher doses are required to achieve the same effect.
After two to four weeks of consistent use, dependence can occur, leading to withdrawal symptoms such as rebound anxiety, irritability, and insomnia if the medication is stopped abruptly.
Why Short-Term Use Matters
The British National Formulary (BNF) recommends limiting benzodiazepine treatment to short periods or intermittent use for this reason.
For chronic conditions, they are often used alongside lifestyle changes or longer-acting antidepressants to bridge the gap until other therapies take effect.
